What a fascinating list of ideas about Australia. Your additional descriptions were very helpful to this teacher from Pennsylvania, United States. I think I would like to try the Vegemite. Do you like it and recommend it? I must say, though that SNAG was my favorite on the list. I had never heard of it before and I really enjoy the idea of learning and playing with new words

It was interesting to see that the word you use for shoes (thong) is a type of underwear here. Thanks for sharing about your country because I like learning new things.

I’m Australian so all the things you listed are familiar to me. I didn’t realise the V8 was Australian though. I like how you have a range of different things eg animals, foods, sayings, film, art, shoes - you give a great snapshot of Australiana

Where I grew up in the US. we called a kind of rubber sandal that basically only covered the bottom of our feet “thongs”. Not we call them “flip-flops” most of the time.

I really like Vegemite and we can get it over here in New Zealand too. We call thongs jandals in New Zealand. I watched Kathy Freeman when she was competing in the Sydney Olympics - she is a really amazing athlete. Did you know that we celebrate ANZAC day here in NZ too? It’s a special day for both our countries because soldiers from both Australia and New Zealand fought side by side at Gallipoli and in many other battles and wars since then. In New Zealand we have a lot of young people who go to Gallipoli on ANZAC Day, do people from Australia go there too?

Hello Mrs. McGhie
I like Vegemite as well. Jandals sounds funny to me but thongs probably sound funny to you. Yes, people from Australia do go to Gallipoli to celebrate Anzac Day.
